Yoga has always been around us, it’s more then 3000 years old apparently. But until very recently Yoga was mostly known as that ‘other thing’ (not really exercise) but that thing you do to take a break or when you don’t really want to exercise. As a kid I remember watching my Mum and her friends all zen out to yoga relaxation tapes, but never really paid much attention to why she was so into it. I just remember the voice of my ballet teacher at the time/Mum’s yoga teacher on the tape saying ‘now breathhhheeeee ladies and relaxxxxxx’.
But Yoga in the last few years has really blown up in NYC. Yoga in New York has become an industry all unto itself. Bikram Yoga or Power Yoga began say 5 years ago in the city to hook in the gym junkie crazies as a real form of exercise, heating up the yoga studio to temperatures akin to a swedish sauna, and getting your body to stretch and hold in dynamic intense poses for long periods of time.
Somehow (thank goodness) Yoga has spread to become something of a modern day must for our minds to survive the hectic-ness of our city! Yoga has moved beyond all the power excruciating stuff into the mainstream to become the ‘it thing’ to practice to be healthy inside and out. Body, mind and soul regeneration. Yoga now is neatly packaged up with the spirituality and mind calming meditation benefits wrapped up into an elegant practice, usually 1.5 hours is ideal so you can do your body right.
