There’s something very nostalgic about drinking a cool icy fresh margarita in the summer time that transports us back to that picturesque beach bar in Mexico! But since we can’t escape New York right now, we’ve discovered the next best thing to do is drink a good margarita here. So we decided to go on a true quest to find the most authentic, freshest, zestiest Margarita there was in Nolita.
Margarita’s can vary from one bar to the next. Different tequilas vary considerably. Tequila is separated into five classes that refer to the time of the maturation process, and two different categories that are related to the amount of sugar held within the tequila after the maturation process is complete. The most potent level is 100% agave tequila, which means that the sugars are 100% from blue agave, found within the tequila designation in Mexico. The most common maturation classes include: blanco/silver; reposado, añejo and extra-añejo. So now that you know a thing or two about tequila, the most important ingredient within a delicious margarita, we wanted to now reveal what we consider to be the best Margarita joints in Nolita. Here it is…
Tacombi – 267 Elizabeth St New York, NY 10012 – our top pick!!!!
Located on Elizabeth Street and Prince Tacombi make a mean cold refreshing lime margarita. It’s served on the rocks. It’s light, refreshing and zingy! You get that ahhhh moment after every sip. The zesty fresh lime juice, extra salty rim, loaded up with plenty of ice (some may say too much for their taste but I like my margaritas slightly on the icy side) makes it dead easy to knock back 5 or 6 and feel just buzzed.Oh and we should mention the prices at Tacombi are so cheap, you can’t go wrong knocking at least one margarita back here!
La Esquina – 114 Kenmare St, New York, NY 10012 (Corner of Cleveland Place)
La Esquina’s brasserie has an exclusive underground tequila bar, which sets up the perfect scene for some boutique margarita making. It’s slightly upscale and possibly not as Mexicana authentica as I would prefer (Beyonce, Jay Z and Jessica Simpson have been snapped here recently) but the hip fancy margarita selection is well worth it. These are my favorites: Hibiscus Rose Margarita Espolon Reposado Tequila, Hibiscus Rose Water Infused Syrup, Triple Sec, Fresh Lime Juice or Margarita de Tamarindo Corralejo Reposado Tequila, Tamarind Syrup, Triple Sec, Fresh Lime Juicela esquina or Pepino Diablo jalapeño infused tequila, cucumber, lime juice, agave nectar, tajin rim (below – yum).
Barrio Chino – 253 Broome St New York, NY 10002 b/t Orchard St & Ludlow Street
Serve more of a traditional strength Agave style Margarita. Their grapefruit margarita is served with a brown sugar rim which takes the tartness away from the grapefruit and makes it just delicious.
Barrio Chino’s choice of margaritas is plentiful! Above you can see the left back: fresh lime; front: strawberry vanilla; right back: fresh grapefruit; front: raspberry Paloma! Their margaritas are made on the stronger side, so only 2-3 of these drinks is all I could take.
